The 6 Best Strategies for a Toxic-Free Life

Many people use everyday products containing toxic chemicals linked to multiple health issues, ranging from asthma, cancer, and other severe illnesses.

The use of toxic products in our homes, schools, and workplaces has been linked to countless health issues. The reality is that we have no control over what is used in public spaces or even around us at the workplace. However, it’s also true that we can take several measures to get rid of these toxins from our lives.

Fortunately, it's easily avoidable, as long as you keep the following tips in mind.

Cut Plastic Usage

Toxic-Free Life

If you’re like most people, then your life is filled with plastic. It’s in everything from grocery bags to water bottles and even cash. So why should you worry about giving up these items? Well, it may surprise you that the chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) can seep into our food and drink when we store or eat them out of containers made of plastic. This chemical has been proven by many scientific studies to be detrimental to our health: it causes weight gain, as well as hormonal problems such as thyroid issues and infertility.

Reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals associated with plastic, like bisphenol A or BPA, can be solved by reducing your use of the material. Switch out for stainless steel alternatives or other more eco-friendly options like bamboo.

Keep Harmful Chemicals Out of the House

Toxic-Free Life

When you are thinking about how to help your family live a healthier lifestyle, it's important to think about some of the basics. The average American home has more than 100 chemicals that are harmful and can cause cancer or other chronic health issues when used on a regular basis.

Whenever coming home, make sure to keep the toxic chemicals outdoors. Keeping harmful chemicals out of your house may seem like a big task, but it doesn’t have to be. There are many common household products that can pose real threats to you and your family. However, the risks they pose can be lessened by making smart decisions about what is stored in your home.

If you keep harmful chemicals out of the home, you will avoid health problems such as cancer and asthma attacks. You can do this by doing the following:

  • Take Off Your Shoes - It is good to remove your footwear before going inside the house. It prevents you from tracking oils and chemicals from outside.
  • Place a Doormat Outside - Doing this helps catch chemical-filled dirt at the door.
  • Keep Your Home Dust-Free - You can keep your home clean and dust-free by regularly wiping down the walls and surfaces with a microfiber cloth, vacuuming floors, or dampening the floor with water.

Ditch the Air Fresheners

We all know that the smell of a freshly cleaned home is pleasing to live in. However, most people do not realize that air fresheners contain numerous chemicals which can be damaging to our health.

Although air fresheners are a convenient way of making any spaces smell and feel fresher, they're often filled with toxic chemicals, so it's best to go for natural alternatives, such as:

  • Open Windows – Did you know that opening your windows in the morning allows fresh air to flow into your home? Not only will it make you feel better, but by simply doing this regularly can reduce asthma attacks, allergies, and infections.
  • Use Flowers - It's easy to give your home a fresh, floral look with just a few simple additions.
  • Simmer Herbs or Spices - You can heat a long, flat pan on your stovetop. In case you don't have enough room in your kitchen to accommodate such an apparatus, consider purchasing a portable electric burner instead.

Stay Away From the Quats

Toxic-Free Life

Over the past few decades, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) have become more and more popular in many households. They are used as disinfectants for their ability to kill a wide range of bacteria, including drug-resistant strains like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These chemicals can also be found on some antibacterial hand soaps, toothpaste, and mouthwashes.

It's best to minimize your use of disinfectant products like antibacterial hand soaps, sanitizers, and cleaning products with the quaternary ammonium compounds or quats. Quats are often used in these types of products because they kill bacteria on contact-- but this isn't the case for all dirt or germs!

Quats are often considered by manufacturers as an easy way to kill bacteria that may be present on surfaces, without really thinking about what kind of effect it would have on other substances. They're more harmful than your regular chemicals.

Clean Up Your Cleaning Products

Toxic-Free Life

When it comes to our health, we are always on the lookout for ways to improve it. We can be exposed to toxic chemicals through food, water, and even air. Toxic chemicals people get exposed to increases as time passes.

Another source of toxic chemical exposure is from household products that we use every day without realizing that they contain dangerous ingredients. Like personal care items, a person's skin absorbs much of the toxic chemicals in household cleaning products. That's why before purchasing or using any home cleaning products, make sure to do your research. Generally, it's best to avoid those with the label "fragrance."

Be Careful What You Drink

Toxic-Free Life

Additionally, artificial sweeteners are a common source of toxins. In fact, they have been linked to obesity, cancer, and diabetes.

The recent announcement about the FDA’s proposal to eliminate caloric content labels from soda cans and bottles has left many wondering what beverages they can trust. In fact, most people are unaware that all of their favorite sugary drinks have added sugars in them. This makes it necessary for you to be aware of the sugar content present in your favorite beverage so as not to consume too much fructose or glucose by accident.

Luckily, making small changes can lead to significant results—and the tips mentioned can help drastically reduce your exposure to daily chemicals, ensuring a more sustainable and healthier you.

The beauty of going green is that it’s not only good for the environment, but also for your family. There are simple ways that you can get rid of these harsh chemicals and replace them with items derived from nature instead!
